Getting Started

You already know that you want to try and research your family tree but you’re just not sure where to begin…

It’s fairly simple…start with you.

Write down what information you do know.  Create a list and start with the important information related to yourself…when and where were you born, when and where did you get married, list the information pertaining to your spouse and any children you have had.  Once you have gotten that far then expand.  What about your parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins…etc.  Go back as far as you can and get as much information as you possibly can find out (or ask someone for).

Don’t get discouraged if you know your great great grandmothers name but don’t when she was born or died.  This is information you can discover the deeper you get into your research.

After you have brainstormed and picked the brains of everyone you can in your family for additional information then you have the basis for your family tree.  This is the information you will need to provide to a professional genealogist (or a friend who’s into genealogy that may be helping you) so that they can begin their research on your family.  If it is your intent to research your own tree then you now have the basis to go to the next step…internet research.
